Small Town to Large City

I recently moved from a small town to a large city populated by a few million people. Although this could seem like an intimidating situation, I am quickly getting used to the city life and actually enjoying it. There were many changes to adopt to, but I am getting a hang of them.

Modifying my main method of transportation from the automobile to my own feet was the biggest change. Back in my home town, I had a car to pull me around. Now I have my shoes. I was actually looking forward to this, because I also make use of the subway, which I really like. :) If you compare using a car vs. walking in a town and in a large city, you would probably come to a similar conclusion as me. In a small town, walking would be very time consuming, thus the use of an automobile. With large cities on the other hand, public transportation seems to balance things out.

Although I don’t have any experience with owning a car in a big city, I believe that using the alternative methods of transportation is less costly and far more effective. With cars, parking spots are hard to find and cost money if you are anywhere near downtown. Also considering the cost of the actual car and the gas you consume, it adds up to quite a bit. Walking is free, but adding to that a mere $75/month, you get unlimited subway and bus passes. This is where the automobile loses terrain. If you walk and use the bus to get to subway stations, you then cut through all the traffic and buildings at 130 km/h. Other positive aspects I’ve discovered is that you actually get a good amount of exercise and sunlight. So much so that I am getting a nice tan and my right leg is hurting a bit.

A skill I have been further developing these past weeks is frugality. I had been doing quite well with keeping my expenses to a minimum, saving up and using money only for healthy food, books, CDs, this Website, gas and a few other things. Having moved to a large city is challenging me to be even more frugal. I have not only reassessed my expenses, but I refrained from purchasing things I would have considered important a few weeks ago. As a result, I am appreciating the things I do have more, as well as being more self-assured.

The vibe in this big city is so different. It’s so much more direct, honest and open-minded —positive or negative. The people are also much more independent, which I find so very liberating. Finally, it might be just me, but caring what other people think in a large city is just absurd, considering you probably won’t see many of the same people ever again. With this way of thinking and the openness of the city, I seem to really express myself with raw honesty. :)

Finally, the biggest difference and why I moved, is for the greater opportunities. The friends I can make, the women I can meet and the education I can get are just astounding. I am happy of this change in my life.

This was a big leap for me, but it was totally worth it. I still have things to organize and get used to, but with a little more time, I will soon be very effective and productive. I have big projects ahead of me and I am ready for the new challenges and discoveries.

Also and lastly, I’m very busy these next few months, so the new posts will stay consistent but be far appart. The quality will not change though. ;)
